Where does Black Friday come from?

Black Friday refers to the day after Thanksgiving. The day following this national holiday in the United States corresponds to a major sales event. Black Friday was named in reference to the long lines of hundreds of thousands of people in front of stores, with these crowds giving the appearance of a sea of black.

In the 1970s, this major sales day had another meaning. In handwritten accounts, the day’s results were written in red when they were negative and in black when they became positive. Given the performance achieved during this promotional day, the results quickly turned black, hence the reference to Black Friday.
